Parents select the YMCA as their child's swim teacher because the Y has a reputation for offering programs that are safe, educational and fun. All classes, contain components related to safety, personal growth, stroke development, water games, sports and rescue. A student centered approach is used towards learning and having fun. *for children 6 months - 5 years old
Parent/Child (6 months - 3 years old)
This class is the introduction of swimming skills, songs, games and fun. An adult must accompany the child in the water.
This is the first class children attend without a parent. It is designed for 3-5 years olds. Basic water skills such as paddle stroke, blowing bubbles and back float are taught.
This is the 2nd level for preschool children. Participants should be able to swim the paddle stroke the width of the pool independently. This class will work on back stroke and rhythmic breathing.
This is the advanced level of swimming for this age group. To enter participants should be able to paddle stroke with rhythmic breathing and back stroke. The class will work on rotary breathing, crawl and swimming underwater.
*for children 1st grade or 6 years and over
This is the first level for youth who are entering at least first grade, have never taken lessons before and are non-swimmers. Participants will learn paddle stroke, independent swimming and rhythmic breathing.
Children entering this level should be able to swim a beginner paddle stroke (crawl). Skills to work on include: perfecting rotary breathing, back stroke and flutter back scull.
To sign up for this level children should have successfully completed Guppy or have the ability to complete 25 yards of both front and back paddle stroke, tread water for one minute and perform ten consecutive bobs. This class focuses on endurance and beginner breast stroke.
To sign up for this level children should have successfully completed Minnow or have the ability to swim 2 lengths of the pool, tread water for 3 minutes and back float for 1 minute. This class focuses on breast stroke and dolphin kick.
Individual attention and special scheduling are some of the advantages to private lessons. Each lesson is 45 minutes in length and is scheduled by the Aquatic Director, with the instructor of your choice, at your convenience.
